Sarah Wallace

Birth Record: She was born 20 May 1858 in Michigan. I tried to get Sarah's birth records from the state, but Michigan only kept records of marriages, births and deaths dating to 1867 (divorces to 1897). Are there Imlay City records, or church records?

Marriage Record: December 27, 1887

Children with Robert Rutherford

Nettie Mae Rutherford, b. 7 Oct 1882; married John Baldwin 07 Dec 1918; d. 27 April 1921. (note: Nettie married Leo Baldwin's brother John. Leo was Mabel's husband and my grandfather. Nettie died in childbirth with Mabel in the room). Nettie's grave is in the Imlay City Township Cemetery, near the road...it is not on the unmarked Rutherford plot behind the Wallace graves)

Howard W. Rutherford, b. 11 Feb 1886

David Rutherford, b. 12 April 1887

Mabel (Baldwin) Rutherford, b. 26 Oct 1891

Walter W. Rutherford, b. 11 July 1893

Beatrice (Smith) Rutherford, b 1897

Robert J. Rutherford, b. 25 Aug 1900

Death Record: I have a copy of the original record (from book V. page 441, 29409-44). Place of Death: County of Lapeer, City/Village: Arcadia, Rural, 5541 Lum Road. Sarah H. Rutherford died 12 Oct 1950, 10.02 AM (Widow) at 92 years. She was born 20 May 1858 in Michigan, citizen; USA. Her father was David Wallace and her mother was Katherine Mc Quinn (on the census reports it is written Catharine; and the McQuinn name is in doubt because Catharine's father is listed as "unknown McEwen"). Informant: Beatrice Smith, Lum. Cause of death (three are given): cerebral hemorrhage, arteriosclerosis, and senility (after six days of illness after the stroke). She was buried 15 Oct 1950 in the Imlay Twp Cemetery, Imlay City, MI. Funeral Directory: Baird Funeral Home, Lapeer. Under social security number it says: "none."

Obituary: I do not have a complete obituary, but I have the following:

"Mrs S. H. Rutherford Succumbs at 93"

Census Record 1870 records ("census)": In the 1870 census for Michigan I found a David and Catherine Wallace with four kids, one of which was Sarah, age 11, which would put Sarah at a little over thirty when she had Mable. The other kids were William age eight, John age 5, and a name I couldn't read, looks somewhat like Emma age 3. David and Catherine would be about 40 when the 1870 census was held. It also lists David and Catherine's country of origin as Scotland.

Census Record 1880: In the 1880 census David is listed as 46, which means his birth date is 1834. Catharine (notice the spelling) was 45, giving her birth date as 1835. Both were born in Scotland. David is a farmer, Catharine is a house keeper. Sarah would have been 21, but she was not living at home for this census (not listed anyway). William is 18. John is 16, and Emma is 13. I find a variety of ages for David and Catharine, most give the same birth date of 1831 to both of them. The birth date of 1829 for both of them is found on the 1870 federal census.

Census Record 1890: The 1890 federal census was destroyed in a fire. Fragments remain, but almost nothing for Michigan,

Census Record 1900:

Robert S. Rutherford born. Oct 1847 Ontario, Canada; died: Dec. 17, 1920... Parents were both born Scotland....(Walter Rutherford) & (Janett Johnson) This was probably taken from incorrect Rootsweb data. I need to have a second look at this, because Robert was born in 1949.

Sarah H. Wallace born May 1858 in Michigan; Parents born in Scotland.

Nettie M. Rutherford born Oct 1882 Michigan
Howard W. Rutherford born Feb 1886 Michigan
David Rutherford born Apr 1887 Michigan
Mable Rutherford born Oct 1891 Michigan
Walter W. Rutherford born July 1893 Michigan
Beatrice Rutherford born Feb 1897 Michigan
Robert J. Rutherford (Unknown)

This information is from the 1900 Census for Lapeer Co, Michigan, but the spelling of the name was different...it looks like "Rediforth" copy was bad....this is sometimes the fault of the census taker.

Census Records for 1910: Place: Lapeer County (Goodland Township): Robert Rutherford (Place of birth of both parents given as Scotland); age 61, born in Canada. Wife: Sarah, age 49 (Place of birth of both parents given as Scotland); born in Michigan. Howard is not on this list of kids (could Howard be a middle name?). Daughter: Nettie, age 27, born Mich. Daughter: Mable: age 18, Mich. Son: Walter: 16. Mich. Daughter: Beatrice: 13, Mich. Son: Robert, 9, Mich.

Census Records for 1920: Lapeer: Robert Rutherford is 71, Sarah is 60. Robert Jr. Is the only kid at home at age 19. Robert died December 17, 1920, supposedly at age 73; so something is wrong.
