Defined Spaces: Near Point Surfaces

For young children especially, early mobility training (orientation) can be addressed through the surfaces that the child routinely encounters. Eating, for example, usually happens at a table, or highchair, or some kind of tray placed before the child. The location of plates (and food on a plate), utensils, and drinking cups can be 'frozen" until the child learns that objects in space can have reliable locations. The child can also learn about search patterns from a simple surface placed in front of the body. Positional concepts can also be explored; up, down, to the side, edges, corners, etc.
