Funding History/Summary

McNally Grant History

The Margaret McNally Trust has donated money every year to the Institute for Innovative Blind Navigation since IIBN was founded in 1997. This is a remarkably generous and committed record. We are blessed to have this important community support. Margaret McNally was a woman who lived in the community of Saginaw (Michigan). She was determined to help blind children from our county and so she left a trust to help support their needs. We are continually grateful to Margaret McNally's family and to the trustees overseeing her trust for their considerable and on-going support. On behalf of the blind children in Saginaw County, their teachers and families, we sincerely thank all the dedicated and kind individuals associated with Margaret McNally and her legacy.

The Margaret McNally Foundation has limited funds available from dividend and interest accounts at the end of each fiscal year. These funds are distributed to non-profit agencies, usually in amounts less than the grant proposals (as in our case each year except 1998). The agencies receiving the grants must then decide which of their target priorities to designate the limited funds toward. IIBN uses the funds to purchase advanced technologies (if sufficient funds are available), for stipends for blind children who work for the Institute, for repair and maintenance costs for the technologies (shipping, postage, customs fees also), and for administrative needs (brochures, letterheads, folders, etc.).

For the 1997/98 school year: $5,300

Inkind Support for IIBN

IIBN receives extensive inkind support, including:

1) The directors salary is totally inkind. IIBN does not reimburse the director, who serves in a voluntary capacity for the non-profit. The director is paid as the orientation and mobility specialist for the Saginaw Intermediate School System (a public school). Inkind amount is approximately $70,000 per year.

2) Office space for IIBN is donated by the Special Needs Vision Clinic, a United Way of Saginaw, Lions International agency located at the Millet Learning Center in Bridgeport, Michigan. The inkind contribution for this space is approximately $4,000 per year ( a very conservative estimate).

3) Utilities, including telephone, voice mail, cell phone, lights, heating, cooling, water, and electrical are all provided by the Intermediate School System. Approximate inkind value is $3,000 yearly.

4) Secretarial support for IIBN is provided by the Intermediate School District of Saginaw, and by the Special Needs Vision Clinic.

5) The Intermediate School System has purchased technologies for IIBN, including:

Kaspa (a second one): $3,000.00
IIBN laptop $2,000.00
Video webcam $100.00
Software: $500.00
MiniGuide $200.00
Total inkind estimate to date for technologies: $5,800.00
